CONFIDENCE IS QUIET, INSECURITY IS LOUD by Josephine Hutton-Mills

“Confidence does not need a microphone, it speaks clearly even in silence.”

There’s a kind of confidence that doesn’t need to be loud or boisterous. You notice it immediately; it is calm, grounded, and unhurried. It is the kind of presence that listens more than it speaks, that doesn’t feel the need to prove anything. It iscomfortable with silence, and somehow, it commands respect. I’ve seen it in leaders who enter a room and don’t need to announce their presence; they simply own it.

On the other hand, there’s a different kind of presence that can be mistaken for confidence. It is loud, dominating, and always speaking, always proving. But often, it is just insecurity in disguise. We can get caught up in thinking that volume equals authority, but true confidence is rarely loud. It is in the leader who listens before responding, the executive who remains calm under pressure, and the professional who doesn’t interrupt to be heard.

The thing is, confidence isn’t just about being assertive; it isalso about restraint. Not every thought needs to be spoken, not every silence needs to be filled, and not every disagreement needs to become a confrontation. These moments require composure, and composure reflects maturity. The most respected professionals understand this. They know that presence isn’t about dominating the room; it is about stabilizing it.

In today’s fast-paced business world, calm has become a rare commodity, making it incredibly powerful. The most impactful professionals aren’t necessarily the ones who speak the most; they’re the ones whose words carry weight when they do. Because in a noisy world, quiet confidence stands out. It is a presence that says, “I am secure, I am focused, and I am here to make a difference.” That is the kind of confidence that inspires trust, respect, and loyalty.

Which are you? Who comes to mind?
