2025 French Open: Coco Gauff progresses to fifth straight quarterfinal

Coco Gauff Cruises into Roland Garros Quarterfinals with Commanding Win over Alexandrova

Coco Gauff, the No. 2 seed from the United States, continued her impressive run at Roland Garros with a dominant 6-0, 7-5 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round of the women’s singles. The match lasted just 1 hour and 22 minutes on the clay courts of Paris.

At 21 years old, Gauff has now become the fourth-youngest player in history to reach five quarterfinals at Roland Garros, trailing only tennis legends Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, and Conchita Martínez.

A Steady Climb Since 2020

Gauff’s Roland Garros journey began in 2020, when she exited in the second round. Since then, she has consistently advanced to at least the quarterfinal stage every year, including a breakout performance in 2022, when she reached her first Grand Slam final.

This latest win marks her ninth major quarterfinal overall. She’s now 15-3 on clay this season, building on strong showings in Madrid and Rome, where she reached the finals. On hard courts this year, she holds a 13-5 record.

Next Challenge: Keys or Baptiste

Gauff will next compete for a spot in her fifth Grand Slam semifinal, facing the winner of the all-American matchup between No. 7 seed Madison Keys and Hailey Baptiste.

In her post-match interview, Gauff credited Alexandrova for raising her level in the second set.

“She really stepped up her game,” Gauff said. “If she wins like that, I can still keep my head high.”

Match Summary

Alexandrova struggled to find rhythm in the opening set, tallying 15 unforced errors to just three winners, allowing Gauff to claim it in dominant fashion. Though Alexandrova mounted a stronger effort in the second set, Gauff’s composure and consistency ultimately sealed the win.

As Gauff advances deeper into the tournament, she continues to solidify her place among the sport’s elite—poised, powerful, and hungry for her first Grand Slam title.
