Fuel supply issues are beginning to hit South Africa just as motorists brace for a significant price increase.

According to BusinessTech, by Monday, 30 March, more than 140 fuel stations had no diesel, while over 130 were out of petrol, highlighting the growing strain across the country.

This is due to global pressures, as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted oil supply chains, pushing Brent Crude prices from $69 to $115 per barrel.

At the same time, the rand has weakened against the US dollar, adding further pressure.

This comes ahead of an expected fuel price adjustment set for Wednesday, 1 April 2026, where petrol could rise by up to R6 per litre and diesel by as much as R10.

Although the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has not yet made an official announcement, the increase is widely anticipated.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that the government is exploring solutions and encouraging remote work to help reduce commuting costs for workers.
