34-year-old woman, Tope Ayanwale, convicted on drug-related charges, collapsed in court after being sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by the Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State.
The conviction was secured by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Edo State Command, which prosecuted her alongside others for unlawful possession of prohibited substances.
Ayanwale, who was arraigned under charge number FHC/B/21c/2026, was found guilty of possessing 1.272 kilograms of cannabis sativa, 2.1 grams of methamphetamine, and 176 grams of tramadol, as charged on March 24, 2027.
Delivering judgment, Justice B. O. Quadiri sentenced her to three calendar years in prison, with an option of a N10 million fine.
Moments after the sentence was pronounced, Ayanwale collapsed inside the courtroom and required urgent medical attention before she was stabilised.
She has since been taken into custody to commence serving her sentence.
