Showmax hit up its subscribers this morning through a newsletter, letting them know that its platform is officially shutting down on Wednesday, 01 April 2026.
This follows the announcement made by Multichoice (now acquired by Canal+) earlier in March.
In the latest statement, Showmax shared that most shows that exist on the platform will be moving to DStv Stream.
“Showmax is starting a new chapter, and your favourite shows are getting a shiny new home on DStv Stream,” read the statement.
It added that “31 March 2026: Last day to renew your Showmax subscription or redeem vouchers,” while noting that “1 April 2026: New subscriptions and renewals will no longer be available.”
On what’s next, the streaming platform added that “We’ll soon share how you can keep enjoying Showmax Originals and more on DStv Stream,” urging users to “be on the look-out.”
Canal+ acquired Showmax’s parent company, MultiChoice, in a $2 billion deal last September.
Showmax launched in August 2015 to compete with global streamers like Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, later relaunching in 2024 with NBCUniversal but struggling to gain traction in a market shaped by costly data, limited broadband, and fierce competition.
