Six Suspects Arrested in massive Rhino Horn Trafficking Network

Six suspects between the ages of 49 and 84 have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a massive rhino horn trafficking network tied to 964 horns worth millions.

The arrests stem from a seven-year investigation by the Wildlife Trafficking Section, with charges including fraud, theft, and violations of biodiversity laws—plus potential racketeering and money laundering.

The suspects are accused of securing trade permits under false pretenses from the Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Department, using them as cover to smuggle rhino horns into illegal markets abroad.

Six suspects, aged between 49 and 84, turned themselves in to the Hawks at Sunnyside Police Station.

They later appeared at the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on 19 August 2025, facing charges of fraud, theft, and environmental violations.
