It’s all eyes on the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournament happening from this month featuring top clubs. Set to take place in the U.S from 14 June to 13 July , the revamped format will feature 32 of the world’s top clubs, including champions from Africa.
South Africa’s very own Mamelodi Sundowns, have qualified thanks to their consistent dominance in the CAF Champions League. The Pretoria-based club will represent the country and Southern Africa, going head-to-head with some of the biggest teams in world football.
Africa will send 4 teams to the tournament. So far, qualified clubs include Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia) and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa).
These clubs earned their spot by either winning the CAF Champions League or through top performances in recent seasons. It’s a massive opportunity for African football to show its level on a global stage.
The tournament will run like the traditional World Cup, with 8 groups of 4 teams. Top 2 teams from each group going into the knockouts, no third-place playoff. There will be a total of 32 games.
This will be the first time South Africa is represented in an expanded Club World Cup, and with Sundowns in form and building a strong squad, local fans will be watching closely. For African football, it’s a shot at global recognition, proving the continent’s best clubs can compete with the elites from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
