Since 3rd of June Petrol goes up, Diesel goes down in South Africa

South Africans are hit by another petrol price hike on 3 June 2026, with petrol prices climbing by R1.43 per litre, while diesel drivers got a substantial cut of between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre.

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed the adjustments, which came into effect today.

The petrol hike follows the partial reversal of the temporary fuel levy relief that was introduced earlier in the year National Treasury has reinstated R1.50 per litre of the previously removed levy, which is why motorists are now paying more at the forecourt.

On the diesel side, the cut is welcome relief between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre cheaper, depending on grade.

The Slate Levy also increased, jumping by 35.04 cents per litre from 122.70 to 157.74 cents per litre. Brent Crude averaged around $104.59 per barrel during the review period, while the rand held relatively steady at around R16.52 to the dollar.

For context, South Africa’s full fuel levy relief (which had been R3.00 per litre for petrol and R3.93 per litre for diesel) is being gradually phased back in, meaning further adjustments could follow in the coming months.
