Almost a week after landing on Netflix, The Polygamist is already making waves and showing that South African stories have an audience well beyond local borders.
The drama made an impressive debut on Netflix’s Top 10 Non-English TV chart, opening at No. 4 globally with two million views and 19.1 million hours watched in its first week.
Considering the series runs for nearly 10 hours across its 22 episodes, those numbers suggest viewers aren’t simply giving it a try.
While The Polygamist topped Netflix charts in South Africa and Kenya, it also climbed to No. 2 in the Bahamas and Guadeloupe, while securing spots in the Top 10 in Nigeria and Jamaica.
For a South African drama rooted in local experiences, that’s no small feat.
At its core, The Polygamist is a story about power, ambition, love, betrayal, and the complicated dynamics within families, subjects that resonate regardless of geography.
Marketed by Netflix as its biggest South African “supernovela” to date, the adaptation of Sue Nyathi’s bestselling novel leans into dramatic twists, emotional cliffhangers and long-form storytelling that keeps audiences coming back for the next episode.

It’s the kind of storytelling that has long connected with viewers across different markets, and The Polygamist appears to be tapping into that same appetite.
The early success of the series also highlights a broader shift taking place on global streaming platforms. South African productions are increasingly finding international audiences, proving that local stories don’t need to be diluted to connect with viewers elsewhere.
The series is led by S’dumo Mtshali, Gugu Gumede, Noluthando Shabalala and Wonder Ndlovu, alongside a cast that includes Celeste Ntuli, Kenneth Nkosi, Luyanda Zwane, Vuyo Biyela, Kwanele Mthethwa, Lwazie Keith Tsebesha and S’thandiwe Kgoroge.
For those who are still sleeping on this hit series, make sure to hit Netflix and start streaming.
