A Ghanaian man has gone viral for jubilantly praising former President John Dramani Mahama after purchasing two balls of kenkey for just GHS 3 at Agyeman Pentecost Junction in Labadi, a suburb of Accra.
In the trending video, the man expressed shock and excitement over the unexpectedly low price. He burst into celebration, shouting Mahama’s name in gratitude.
“A ball of kenkey is GH¢3? John Mahama, Onaapo! Within two or three months, it will be GH¢2. God bless you,” he exclaimed joyfully.
The video sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users questioned whether kenkey prices had truly dropped that much. One commenter noted, “My mom says she buys kenkey for GHS 5 or even GHS 7—where is this guy buying his from?”
Others, however, supported the claim, suggesting that Labadi is known for more affordable food. “Kenkey has always been cheap in Labadi. You can even get it for GHS 2 here,” another user added.
Meanwhile, in a broader economic context, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) have jointly announced plans to reduce prices within 60 days, following the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi.
On May 14, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare held discussions with trade unions to explore how currency stabilization could be reflected in market prices.
AGI President Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke acknowledged that while prices remain high due to existing stock purchased at higher exchange rates, adjustments will soon follow.
“We commend the government’s efforts,” he said. “The impact of the stronger cedi should begin to show in both wholesale and retail markets within the next two months.”
For many, the viral kenkey video has become a symbol of cautious optimism as traders and consumers alike await the promised relief in prices.
