Just months after arriving as Muvhango’s replacement, drama series Pimville has already hit a major wall.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that the telenovela has been discontinued from its weekly slot on SABC 2 due to ongoing issues with the production company, Bakwena Productions.
The move follows months of salary disputes after actors and crew reportedly went unpaid since February, eventually leading workers to refuse filming earlier this month.
Pimville stars local talent, including Gail Mabalane, Thapelo Mokoena, Matli Mohapeloa, Michelle Mosalakae, Jesse Suntele, Keke Mphuthi, amongst others.
In its statement, the SABC blamed “unresolved contractual obligations and breaches” for the decision to discontinue the series immediately.
It described the situation as “deeply regrettable,” especially after the hard work shown by the cast, crew, and everyone involved in the production. The broadcaster also acknowledged the “unwavering support” received from viewers, partners, and stakeholders who helped contribute to the show’s success.
As part of its contingency plan, the SABC confirmed that Pimville’s former 21:00 slot will now air repeat episodes of Season 2 of Amalanga Awafani.
It added that “further updates” regarding the future of Pimville will still be communicated.
Still, the broadcaster hinted that there may still be hope for the drama, saying the current pause “does not necessarily mean the end of Pimville” while future options are being considered.
