Gunmen attacked a mosque in Unguwan Mantau in Katsina state, northwestern Nigeria on Tuesday morning, killing at least 50 people while they were gathered for Fajr, the dawn prayer.
The assault happened during dawn prayers.
Eyewitnesses say the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and stormed the mosque, opening fire on the congregation.
Following the shooting, the attackers swept through the village, burning houses and abducting roughly 60 residents.
Survivors reported that many of the abducted were women and girls, taken while chaos unfolded.
Security forces were deployed to the area, but reached the scene after the attackers had fled.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The region has experienced repeated violence from armed groups, often targeting villages during vulnerable hours.
Local leaders are calling for swift investigations and improved protection for rural communities like Unguwan Mantau.
