Trouble dey come: GPRTU threatens strike over GH¢1 increase in fuel levy

Transport Operators Announce Nationwide Strike Over Fuel Levy Hike

Commercial transport operators across Ghana have declared a nationwide strike set for June 10, 2025, in protest against a recent GH¢1 increase in the fuel levy.

Speaking at a press briefing on June 5, Abass Ibrahim Imoro, the Industrial Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), strongly criticized the decision. He described the levy hike as a unilateral move made without adequate consultation with key industry stakeholders.

Imoro warned that the GH¢1 per litre increase would translate into a 6.7% rise in operational costs, placing a significant burden on commercial drivers. As a result, he cautioned, transport fares could surge by as much as 15%, further straining commuters already grappling with economic challenges.

The GPRTU, along with other transport unions, is demanding an immediate reversal of the policy. They are calling for transparent and inclusive dialogue with the government and relevant stakeholders to address broader issues affecting the energy and transport sectors.

Imoro urged the government to reflect on the potential impact of the levy, warning of severe economic consequences if no meaningful engagement takes place. He stressed that failure to act could trigger a ripple effect across the economy, deepening existing hardships for both operators and the public.
