This week on ‘BEHIND THE LENS with Queen Liz’, we look at The Case of ‘One Man, One Woman’ and Polygamy — What was God’s Original Design

You’d agree with us that the discussion of ‘polygamy’ is always dense in plot, deep in characterisation and profound in narrative technique that even some fellows these days sometimes publicly want to experience polygamy. Some also frown at it, calling it a ‘sin’ against the Creator of the Universe; but in same thought, some scholars have argued that before polygamy can be looked as a sin, first and foremost, religious, cultural, and historical context must be taken into considerations. Within the framework of the Bible and Christian theology, it has historically been viewed as a departure from God’s ideal, though its status as a “sin” has shifted over time — different casts, different scripts.

This week on ‘BEHIND THE LENS with Queen Liz’, hosted by Elizabeth Essuman, the panelists converge to take a deep look at what polygamy is all about. They look at the biblical God’s design and what societal view has woven it to be.

It gets tricky as the Bible never explicitly states, “Thou shalt not practice polygamy”, truthfully, many Old Testament patriarchs that we revere and idolize had multiple wives, and King Solomon (who is said to be the wisest human to ever lived) had many wives, yet God still used him.

This subject remains one that tickles, thus, some religious scholars still stand by their stance that polygamy was not God’s original design for marriage. They argue that the biblical account in Genesis establishes that God designed marriage as a monogamous covenant between one man and one woman (“one flesh”) in the Garden of Eden.

Whichever blueprint was used, the lingering question remains that is marriage about convenience or covenant, is it about stress and practicality. Whatever you think, it somehow ends on two fronts — marrying one woman is stressful; imagine adding two or three AND others claiming that multiple wives reduce stress.

Whether polygamy is a cultural reality or God’s perfect will, this episode has a take-home pack with some reflections, and, of course, food for thought for you.
