La Foundation For The Arts and The Beyond Collective are honored to present ‘MARIAMA WO HA’ a solo exhibition by Moses Adjei, curated by Rania Odaymat.

The exhibition opens on December 11, 2025, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm through to February 11, 2026 at LAFA, 144 La Rd.

Mariama Wo Ha intertwines intimate personal history with vibrant social centary diverse multi-media works. Drawing from his childhood as an orphan in Sodom and Gomorrah, an informa settlement in Accra, Moses Adjei spotlights the lives of the Kayayei – women porters – whose strength and resilience challenge prevailing socio-economic marginalization. Central to this exhibition is a powerful act of recognition and reclamation.

“I exchange the used pans for new ones, then etch their faces into the old and worn an act i OT acknowledgement and preservation. I shape each surface with hammers and improvised chisels made from scavenged nails. The sound of metal striking metal recalls the rhythm of Sodom and Gomorrah – the clamor of mechanics, carpenters, scrap dealers, vulcanizers – injecting memory and labor into the skin of the sculpture.” – Moses Adjei

“Apawa Coins presents a challenge to aesthetic and societal hierarchies: to the ways we see, collect, and commemorate. By re-casting the pans as both artifacts of survival and objects of worth, the artist unsettles elitist canons of beauty, re-centering those historically rendered peripheral.

The act of replacing their old pans with new ones, then sculpting their likeness into the metal, is an act of tangible restoration. It dignifies both the object and its former bearer, asserting that art’s legitimacy lies in its capacity to hold stories of shared humanity.

Apawa Coins thus stands as a timeless sculptural archive where seeing becomes resistance, and loss becomes lineage.” – Rania Odaymat

La Foundation for the Arts (LAFA), founded by Safoa Aïsha Cablye-Gaisie, is a woman-led independent art foundation dedicated to celebrating and advancing African and diasporan art and culture.

Originally a gallery space, LAFA has evolved into a movement dedicated to preserving stories, empowering creators, and redefining the global value of African art.

LAFA connects Africa and its diaspora through exhibitions, collaborations, and programs like Bridge Conversations, fostering identity and narrative reclamation.

Committed to community, LAFA uses art as a tool for healing, education, and transformation with outreach and art therapy initiatives that promote wellness and inclusion.

The Beyond Collective emerged in 2013 from a visionary group of Ghanaian artists determined to redefine the creative landscape.

Rejecting the commercialization of art as a mere commodity, the Collective has steadfastly championed transformative exhibitions, inclusivity in art, artist empowerment, collaborative innovation, and creative education.

The Collective, as pioneers championing the recognition of photography as fine art through their first group exhibition, remains dynamic and responsive to changing cultural trends and urgent social issues. Their latest project exemplifies this commitment – mobilising an extensive network of artists and practitioners powerful, community-driven campaign addressing water safety and confronting the contamination crisis caused by illegal mining also known as Galamsey.

Art enthusiasts and press are cordially invited to the opening reception on 11 December 2025, from 6 pm to 9 pm at LAFA. The musical program for the opening reception, curated by Transit @transitlive and featuring King Ayisoba, will also mark the launch of the @accrahousefest.
