Uber launches electric cars in South Africa…starting in Johannesburg

Uber has rolled out Uber Go Electric, introducing its first fully electric service in South Africa.

The electric car is the Henrey Minicar 4-seater, imported from China by Valternative Energy, which partners with Uber Electric and also supports Uber’s electric-motorbike fleet.

The roll-out has begun in Johannesburg with 70 cars already on the road, and that number is expected to grow to 350 by the end of January.

With this move, Uber says drivers will save more by cutting out fuel costs and reducing maintenance, allowing them to keep a larger share of their earnings.

And for riders, the shift means quieter, smoother trips at an affordable price while helping cities reduce emissions and ease congestion.

Mohamed Jeewa, CEO of Valternative, said “Electric mobility becomes meaningful when it’s accessible,” explaining that they support drivers by “managing charging, servicing, and fleet operations” so the transition carries no upfront risk. He added that their model “remove[s] the friction of daily cash flow… by providing an all inclusive ecosystem,” aiming for both riders and drivers “to increase their nett earnings.”

Jeewa called the move to electrify local fleets “one of the most rewarding journeys for our business.”

Uber Go Electric is now available on the Uber app.
