Cape Town is getting its second airport! The Cape Winelands Airport is set to become the city’s second-largest airport after Cape Town International.
The privately owned project, formerly known as Fisantekraal Airfield, is now entering its final environmental impact assessment stage and is targeted for commissioning in 2028.
Backed by a strategic partnership between Cape Winelands Airport and Growthpoint Properties, the development aims to create a next-generation aviation, hospitality, and industrial hub in the region. Growthpoint, one of South Africa’s most prominent property groups and co-owner of the V&A Waterfront, brings extensive experience in large-scale and tourism-led developments.
The initial R8 billion investment will fund terminal buildings, runways, and a 450-hectare developable estate, forming the backbone of the new airport precinct. Once operational, the project is expected to sustain approximately 35,000 direct and indirect jobs, with projections exceeding 100,000 jobs over its first 20 years.
Pending environmental approvals, construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with phased development starting with runway and safety infrastructure, followed by terminal, cargo, and industrial zones. By 2050, the airport is projected to handle over five million passengers annually, significantly expanding Cape Town’s aviation capacity and global connectivity.
