This week on ‘The Real Talk Podcast’, host Elizabeth Essuman and her panelists take on ‘single parenting’, the challenges and how society have come to embrace what is now part of us; and actress and TV presenter Victoria Zugah popularly known as Vicky Zugah is guest.
You’d agree that single parenting involves a person raising a child or children on their own, without a live-in partner to share the responsibilities. This can stem from divorce, separation, non-marriage, or the death of a partner. Globally, about 13% of women aged 18-60 worldwide are single mothers, and the world average for single-parent households is around 7%, though rates can be much higher in some regions like sub-Saharan Africa (32%) and Latin America (24%).

The conversation kicked off when Vicky stated that in our today’s world – with Ghana in context, arguably, most men will always choose their goals over families, whilst most women will choose their families over their goals. She said this somewhat has accounted for why we have so many women as single parents compared to the men.
Single parents often face significant social stigma including societal judgments and stereotypes, which can impact their self-esteem and contribute to feelings of isolation. “I have been faced with some people calling me, ‘bad’, because I’m a single mother. It used to affect me back then but not anymore.” She added.
“In our society single parenting sometimes gets saddening when some single parents have to manage all aspects of parenting alone and rely heavily on support systems like family and friends.”
