Almost Goodbye! Coca-Cola South Africa set to cut 680 jobs…and to shut down Bloemfontein and East London plants

Coca-Cola Beverages SA is reportedly in the process of a major restructure that could result in more than 680 job losses.

SABC News reports that financial difficulties have been cited as the primary reason, with the company offering a “generous separation package” to affected workers.

The report further notes that Coca-Cola Beverages SA’s restructuring will include shutting down its Bloemfontein and East London production plants.

Coca-Cola Beverages SA’s restructuring has already drawn backlash from the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), who say proper consultation was ignored.

FAWU’s Edwin Mabowa alleges that Coca-Cola Beverages SA “is going behind our backs and consulting with the employees individually,” bypassing union processes before CCMA talks begin.

Coca-Cola Beverages SA, he added, has been telling workers “that first phase and the second phase is completed,” while “according to the union, there is no first and second phase.”

Coca-Cola Beverages SA will now face the union in formal talks at the CCMA scheduled for Friday, 19 September 2025.
