Nigeria faced another major blackout on Wednesday after the national power grid collapsed, cutting off electricity to major areas including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and others across the country.
The grid dropped sharply from 4,500MW to just 120MW. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the outage at 11:23 a.m., blaming it on a complete loss of supply from the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
Only four power distributors received any supply: Ibadan (50MW), Enugu (40MW), Abuja (20MW), and Benin (10MW). The rest, including Ikeja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, were left in the dark. AEDC says work is underway to restore power.
This adds to a long list of recurring grid failures that continue to frustrate Africa’s biggest economy and its already struggling power sector.
