The South African Government has issued a warning to those smoking Vapes, which are now trending among younger generations.
What started as a new alternative for smokers has become a habit for teenagers, students, and even adults. Despite it being illegal to sell vapes to anyone under 18, the devices are widely available, and the numbers keep climbing.
The local government has raised concerns about the health risks of vaping, warning that it can damage your lungs, increase anxiety, and hook your brain on nicotine. Other widely reported dangers include coughing, shortness of breath, seizures, and nicotine addiction—though these specific effects were not listed in the government’s statement.
In a sharp public message, they say…
“Vaping ≠ Safe… it smells like candy, but it’s built like a trap… Damages your lungs – like, for real… Hooks your brain on nicotine… You’re paying to poison yourself… Don’t get played.”
While vaping has become a global concern, some countries like Singapore have responded by banning it entirely, while others—such as the UK—have banned single-use vapes because of their risks and easy access for minors.
In South Africa?….the government is working on a new law to strengthen tobacco control and regulate vaping more strictly. Known as the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill, this proposed law aims to reduce nicotine use and protect public health.
The bill was tabled at the National Assembly by the Minister of Health on 9 December 2022. Since then, it has gone through public hearings across all nine provinces. In each province, three districts were selected—adding up to 27 in total. Community members, including parents, youth, and leaders, were invited to share their views.
Once the Parliamentary hearings are completed, additional public consultations will take place in the provinces. If approved by the National Council of Provinces, the bill will be sent to the President to sign into law.
The proposed law includes several big changes:
• Stricter rules on how cigarettes and cigars are sold and marketed
• New rules for how vaping products are sold, advertised, and packaged
• Plain, standardised packaging for all tobacco and vaping items
• A full ban on sales through vending machines
• More indoor and outdoor areas where smoking and vaping will not be allowed
