Rwanda launches Africa’s first self-flying air taxi

Rwanda has become the first African country to launch a public flight of a self-flying electric air taxi.

This breakthrough, made possible through a partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), was confirmed by the Ministry of Infrastructure on Wednesday.

The new technology is aimed at easing traffic and improving transport access. “Rwanda is actively building a future where our cities are more connected,” said Infrastructure Minister Jimmy Gasore. A demonstration flight of the EHang EH216-S aircraft will take place at the African Aviation Summit in Kigali.

The air taxi initiative is part of a bigger plan to modernise how people travel in Rwanda. Gasore added, “We are showcasing the future of aviation and our commitment to safe, progressive air mobility.”

Officials say the project creates space for new expertise and supports Rwanda’s goal of becoming a regional hub for modern transport solutions.
