SOUTH AFRICA FOOTBALL: Government announces R82 Million Budget for VAR

The Department has announced a whopping R82 million budget aimed at bringing the VAR system to South African football, in a strategic effort to enhance match fairness and align with international best practices.

In partnership with SAFA and the PSL, this initiative targets referee inconsistencies that have sparked frustration among fans and stakeholders alike.

In an official statement, the department confirmed that the R82 million allocated budget will enable “the swift development of a comprehensive project plan, training programmes for referees and officials, technology selection, stadium assessments, and the establishment of a VAR Training Centre.

They further noted that “a portion of the budget will be dedicated to providing reliable connectivity at relevant stadiums,” which will improve both VAR function and “stadium safety… by facilitating better communication in emergencies such as locating missing children.

Sport Minister Gayton McKenzie didn’t hold back his praise…

“We commend SAFA’s dedication to this process and their prioritisation of transparency and FIFA compliance,” he said.

He believes this is a game-changer, noting that “these measures will undoubtedly contribute to the successful rollout of VAR, enhancing the integrity and quality of our domestic competitions.”

McKenzie acknowledged the public’s growing frustration over match-day officiating, adding, “The nation is eagerly awaiting the delivery of this system, especially as we continue to see questionable decisions by referees during matches.”

He wrapped up by affirming full government backing: “The Department remains fully supportive and looks forward to continued collaboration with SAFA and the PSL.”
