The street, torn apart by a gas blast nearly two years ago, has now seen major reconstruction.
Phase one of the repair project has wrapped up, with paving bricks used instead of the usual tar surface.
So far, just R82 million of the R192 million set aside for the work has been spent.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero visited Lilian Ngoyi Street on Monday to inspect progress on the once-bustling road.
The reconstruction has swapped out the old tar surface for brick paving, but pavements, sidewalks, and the removal of construction containers are still pending.
Morero confirmed that “a total of R82 million has been spent on work package one, which refers to the scene of the explosion,” adding that “R110 million has been secured for work package two.”
That next phase will focus on upgrading the precinct’s look and giving the street a more modern edge.
