Uganda denies it has entered deal with U.S. to take in Deportees

Uganda has denied claims that it entered into a deportation deal with the United States, rejecting a CBS News report published Tuesday, August 19.

The report had suggested that Washington had secured arrangements with both Uganda and Honduras to accept deported individuals.

Foreign Affairs Minister Okello Oryem responded to the claims in an interview with Reuters, stating that Uganda “has not signed any agreement” with the US.

He emphasized that the country lacks the infrastructure needed to support such a programme.

This denial comes as the Trump administration seeks to ramp up deportations through third-country partnerships. The alleged deals mirror similar strategies used to shift migration responsibilities abroad.

Uganda already faces immense strain, hosting nearly two million refugees fleeing violence and unrest in surrounding nations. The government’s swift rejection of the report highlights the growing pressure on countries caught in the crossfire of global migration policy.
