SHOPRITE to shut operations in Ghana & Malawi

Shoprite Holdings has announced plans to exit Ghana and Malawi, a move aimed at tightening its footprint in South Africa.

The retailer confirmed the decision on Tuesday, 2 August 2025, as part of its ongoing strategy to consolidate operations.

Shoprite grew to dominate Africa’s grocery scene across 15 countries, but challenges like unstable currencies, high inflation, costly imports, and dollar rentals hurt its ventures in places such as Angola and Nigeria.

In Malawi, the retailer signed an agreement on 6 June to sell its five stores, pending approvals from the Competition and Fair Trading Commission and the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

In Ghana, it has already received a binding offer for seven stores and a warehouse, a deal the company says is “highly probable.”

These transactions follow earlier withdrawals from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Madagascar, and the DRC, alongside Shoprite’s decision to limit investment in supermarkets outside South Africa.
