This Life! Mass Burial planned for 300 Unclaimed Bodies in Ghana

The Police Hospital in Accra has announced it will carry out a mass burial for 300 unclaimed bodies currently in its morgue.

The burial is scheduled for August 11, 2025, following the required 21-day public notice period.

In a statement released on July 19, Public Affairs Officer Chief Inspector Faustina Afia Nunekpeku said the remains include unidentified former patients, accident victims, crime victims, and individuals classified as paupers.

“This is a necessary effort to ensure the deceased are laid to rest respectfully while maintaining public health standards,” the hospital stated.

The hospital stressed the importance of identification, noting that many of the bodies remain unknown due to a lack of personal information.

“We encourage everyone, regardless of age or background, to always carry valid national ID,” the statement read.

Authorities also urged citizens to share emergency contact details with trusted relatives or friends and to store them in easily accessible places—especially for those living alone or with medical conditions.

Such proactive steps, they added, can make a significant difference in emergencies.

The hospital advised the public to remain informed on local health and safety protocols, particularly in remote or less-monitored areas.

Families are also encouraged to keep track of vulnerable loved ones, including the elderly, children, and individuals with mental health challenges, who may be more likely to go missing.

The hospital says the upcoming burial, though solemn, is necessary and carried out with dignity and care.
