Tragedy struck in Owo, Ondo State, as a final-year student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), identified as Arobo Precious, reportedly took his own life after suffering emotional trauma allegedly caused by a romantic relationship breakdown.
The 28-year-old Higher National Diploma (HND) student was found dead in a nearby bush close to his residence late on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. His lifeless body was discovered with a rope around his neck, suggesting he had hanged himself.
Shortly before his death, Precious reportedly posted a heart-wrenching video on his social media page where he emotionally blamed a female acquaintance, identified as Eniayewu Opeyemi, for the circumstances that led him to end his life. In the video, he stated: “Eniayewu Opeyemi was the one that got me into this. People say there’s still life out there but, to me, there’s nothing more”.
His grieving family confirmed his death and burial, describing him as a kind, promising young man whose tragic decision has left them heartbroken.
The Ondo State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident. She revealed that the case was reported at the B Division Police Station in Owo around 10 p.m. on the same day.
Police detectives recovered the rope used in the suicide while the body was deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, for further examination and autopsy.
SP Odunlami-Omisanya assured that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death is ongoing.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the polytechnic community and the larger Owo town, with many calling for increased mental health support for students facing emotional challenges.
