Supreme Court Nominee Justice Dennis Adjei Questions Legal Inconsistencies on Age of Consent and Marriage

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Supreme Court judge nominee Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei raised serious concerns about what he described as a legal contradiction within Ghana’s statutory framework—specifically regarding the age of sexual consent versus the legal age for marriage.
Justice Adjei highlighted the inconsistency as a significant issue with potential implications for child protection, social policy, and the justice system. He argued that the disparity between the two legal thresholds could undermine efforts to safeguard minors and called for a thorough legislative review.
“There is a need for consistency in our laws. We must ensure that the age of consent and the age of marriage align to prevent legal loopholes that could be exploited,” he told the committee.
His remarks come amid growing public discourse on reforms needed to strengthen Ghana’s legal and social protection systems, particularly for children and vulnerable populations.
The judge’s comments are expected to reignite national conversations around legal reforms and the intersection of traditional, social, and legal norms in Ghana.
