Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin Reaffirms Opposition to LGBTQ+ Activities in Ghana
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reiterated his strong opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, emphasizing that such practices will neither be accepted nor legalized in the country.
During an official visit to Uganda, Bagbin underscored Ghana’s commitment to its cultural and moral values, asserting that LGBTQ+ orientations are foreign impositions incompatible with African traditions.
“You can be sure that the world they want to create will not exist while we are alive,” he declared. He went on to state that LGBTQ+ identities are not African, not natural, and not created by God—describing them as a foreign agenda that must be firmly resisted.
His comments come amid ongoing national debate over legislation aimed at criminalizing LGBTQ+ activities, following similar moves in other African nations.
In Ghana, the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill was passed by the 8th Parliament but did not receive presidential assent. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo neither signed the bill into law nor referred it to the Supreme Court. Instead, the bill faced legal challenges from private individuals questioning its constitutionality.
By the end of the 8th Parliament’s term, the Supreme Court had not issued a ruling on the matter, leading to the bill’s lapse without further action.
