Some will pay back the money – Deputy AG hints at plea bargain in GH¢560m NSS ghost names scandal

NSS GH¢560 Million Scandal: Some Suspects Willing to Return Stolen Funds – Deputy Attorney General

New developments have emerged in the GH¢560 million ghost names scandal involving the National Service Scheme (NSS), as several of the 22 individuals implicated are reportedly willing to return the stolen funds.

Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai, speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, disclosed that the legal team is currently engaging with the suspects. He revealed that not all of them may face prosecution as initially expected.

“A lot of them are willing to return the money,” Dr. Srem Sai stated. “Only a few are not interested in restitution.”

According to him, ongoing discussions could lead to a reduction in the number of accused persons eventually brought before the courts. “It will come down because we are still having discussions,” he added.

Dr. Srem Sai also highlighted plea bargaining as a legal avenue being considered. Suspects may be allowed to negotiate lighter sentences in exchange for guilty pleas and repayment of stolen funds.

“After we charge them, they can propose plea bargains,” he explained. “They might say, ‘We are guilty, but please reduce our prison time if we return this amount.’”

He noted that the suspects must present convincing reasons to justify any leniency: “They give us reasons to consider.”

The case continues to draw public attention as the government pursues both accountability and recovery of the embezzled funds.
