James Gardiner is the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA) in Ghana. He recently expressed concerns about the lack of support for the local movie industry.
Gardiner noted that Ghanaians prefer foreign films over local ones. This trend makes it hard for Ghanaian movies to gain appreciation. He spoke on TV3’s The Afternoon Show on June 5, 2025.
He mentioned that support for streaming and watching Ghanaian films is low. This lack of engagement contributes to the decline of the industry.
Gardiner highlighted that even quality Ghanaian films struggle to attract viewers. He said, “In Ghana, we don’t have enough numbers supporting our films.”
He added that Ghanaians often overlook their own productions while valuing foreign content. This includes films from countries close to Ghana, not just America or Canada.
“I feel like people still haven’t given Ghanaian producers a second chance,” he stated.
He contrasted this with Nigeria’s film industry, which enjoys strong support and traction from its audience.
