Your efforts are helping in galamsey fight – Lands Minister to IGP

Lands Minister Commends IGP for Role in Anti-Galamsey Fight

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, has praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Ghana Police Service for their unwavering efforts in the fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

Speaking at the Global Mining Summit on June 2, 2025, Minister Buah commended the police for their vital role in protecting Ghana’s environment, particularly the country’s water bodies, which have suffered severe pollution from illegal mining activities.

In recent months, the Ghana Police Service has intensified nationwide operations targeting illegal mining hotspots. In areas such as Samreboi and its environs, a dedicated Anti-Galamsey Taskforce successfully recovered over 100 excavators and bulldozers. The taskforce also seized weapons and Chanfang machines—equipment commonly used by illegal miners.

Numerous arrests have been made, and suspects are currently facing legal action. Similar enforcement operations have been conducted across the Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Central, and Upper West Regions, underscoring the Police Service’s firm commitment to curbing illegal mining across the country.

Minister Buah noted that the police have not only enforced the law but also collaborated closely with local authorities and environmental stakeholders to ensure sustained progress in the anti-galamsey campaign.

“The work of the Ghana Police Service under the leadership of the IGP is commendable. Their dedication is helping to preserve our natural resources for future generations,” he said.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the momentum of its anti-galamsey efforts in partnership with key institutions. Their goal is to ensure long-term protection of the country’s natural environment, especially its critical water resources.

This renewed national push for environmental protection comes as the nation prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the June 3 flood and fire disaster—an enduring reminder of the consequences of neglecting environmental and urban planning concerns.
