KOD Reflects on Early Career Working with Osei Kwame Despite
Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD and currently serving as the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, has opened up about his early professional journey and his longstanding connection with renowned Ghanaian businessman Osei Kwame Despite.
Speaking to blogger Ghhyper at the grand opening of Despite’s Auto Museum in East Legon on June 1, 2025, KOD shared personal memories of his teenage years, revealing that he sold music CDs and cassettes while still in secondary school.
“My secondary school job was selling cassettes from Lumba’s shop—I worked for Despite,” KOD recalled. “That was how I got introduced to the world of music and entertainment.”
He credited this early experience as foundational to his eventual path into the creative and broadcasting industry, where he would go on to become one of Ghana’s most recognizable voices.
KOD also reflected on a missed opportunity to be part of the pioneering team at Peace FM, the flagship radio station owned by Osei Kwame Despite. At the time, he was already committed to Radio Gold and couldn’t make the switch.
“I was one of the early voices expected to join Peace FM,” he said. “But I couldn’t show my face because I was with Radio Gold.”
His remarks highlighted not only his admiration for Despite but also the influence that early mentorship and hands-on experience played in shaping his successful media and public service career.
