Chairman Wontumi May Be Released Today as Legal Team Works to Finalize Bail
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), may regain his freedom today, June 2, 2025, as efforts intensify to resolve legal hurdles delaying his release.
Wontumi has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for the past five days, following investigations into alleged financial crimes. The charges include fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Although he was granted bail to the tune of GHC50 million on May 28, delays in meeting and verifying the bail conditions have kept him in custody. His legal team claims the terms were satisfied by May 30, yet his release has not been effected.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, remains hopeful. In a statement, he expressed confidence that the outstanding legal technicalities would be addressed, allowing for Wontumi’s release. “We’re working diligently to clear the last few issues. By Monday, we expect a fresh start and a positive outcome,” he said.
Adding to the momentum, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reportedly shown interest in the matter and expressed a commitment to ensuring a swift resolution.
As of this morning, supporters and party members await further updates, hopeful that Wontumi will be released before the day ends.
