Dr. Kingsley Agyemang Champions STEM Education in Abuakwa South Through Transformative Quiz Initiative
Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, is spearheading a transformative educational initiative aimed at equipping young learners with critical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). His flagship program, the “Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz,” has grown into a major academic platform, reshaping the educational landscape in the constituency.
Now in its sixth year, the competition has become a cornerstone of academic life for students across Abuakwa South. The 2025 edition brought together 78 Junior High Schools (JHS), 92 primary schools, and even a school for the deaf—underscoring the inclusive and far-reaching nature of the initiative.
At its core, the quiz fosters early interest in STEM fields while enhancing performance in key subjects like mathematics, science, and spelling. Over the years, it has significantly improved learning outcomes at both the primary and JHS levels.
Madam Comfort Ofori Appiah, the Municipal Director of Education for Abuakwa South, commended the program as a “powerful catalyst for academic excellence.” She noted that the quiz has had a direct and measurable impact on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance in the district.
“In our 2024 BECE results, all top-performing students had participated in the competition,” she said. “This clearly shows the quiz is more than a contest—it’s a driver of better learning outcomes.”
She also highlighted formerly underperforming schools such as Asiakwa R/C Primary School and Apedwa Presby JHS, which have since emerged as academic leaders thanks to the program.
“Every school now wants to be a part of this competition,” she added. “Its reputation is growing, and its impact is evident.”
Beyond academic performance, the quiz is also boosting students’ confidence and communication skills. One participant shared how it improved her public speaking, while a parent noted his son’s newfound enthusiasm for classroom learning.
The initiative’s ripple effect is being felt far beyond the constituency. Several past participants have gone on to represent their senior high schools in the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz, and many have secured admission to top global institutions, including Memphis University in the United States.
Dr. Agyemang emphasized that STEM education is key to Ghana’s future.
“The world is moving towards STEM,” he said. “We must prepare our students with more than textbook knowledge—they need real-world skills and confidence to compete globally.”
In addition to personally funding the program, Dr. Agyemang has worked closely with the Abuakwa South Municipal Education Office to provide learning materials that help schools prepare effectively. His commitment to holistic education is evident in every aspect of the competition’s design and execution.
The 2025 edition concluded with Asiakwa R/C Primary School winning the Kingsley Spelling Challenge, and Apedwa Presby JHS clinching victory in the Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz. At the closing ceremony on May 23, Dr. Agyemang praised the finalists:
“We are proud of your achievements. You’ve shown what dedication and hard work can accomplish.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Agyemang announced plans to expand his educational efforts further. These include literacy enhancement programs and a bold vision to partner with international investors on building Africa’s largest movie studio and AI center in Abuakwa South—a move he believes will create substantial opportunities for youth empowerment and local development.
Madam Ofori Appiah also called on philanthropic organizations and corporate partners to support the growing initiative:
“There is room for others to join us. With more support, we can reach even more schools and students.”
As the Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz continues to grow, its impact resonates deeply among pupils, teachers, parents, and policymakers—standing as a shining example of how focused investment in education can transform communities.
