US singer Chris Brown has been released on bail following a court appearance in London, allowing him to continue his world tour despite facing a serious criminal charge. The 36-year-old artist is accused of grievous bodily harm (GBH) in connection with an alleged assault at Tape nightclub in 2023.
Brown was granted bail by Judge Tony Baumgartner at Southwark Crown Court and must pay a £5 million security fee. Although he did not attend the hearing in person, the court confirmed that he will remain free until his next appearance on June 20.
The singer had been held in custody following an initial hearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court after his arrest on Thursday morning. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police detained him at a Manchester hotel, shortly after he arrived in the UK via private jet for his tour.
Taking to Instagram after his release, Brown declared: “FROM THE CAGE TO THE STAGE!!!”—a reference to his return to performing. He also promoted his upcoming international tour, BREEZYBOWL, scheduled across the UK in June and July.
As part of his bail conditions, Brown must reside at a court-approved address and is barred from visiting Tape nightclub or contacting the alleged victim. He is also prohibited from applying for international travel documents and may only use his passport for tour-related purposes within the UK.
The prosecution alleges that music producer Abraham Diaw was the victim of an “unprovoked attack” during a crowded night at Tape. Diaw was reportedly struck with a bottle and later followed to another area of the venue where he was repeatedly punched and kicked.
Another US rapper, Omololu Akinlolu—known professionally as HoodyBaby—has also been charged in connection with the incident. The 38-year-old is scheduled to appear in court alongside Brown on June 20. A joint case management hearing is set for October 24.
