GPRTU Announces 15% Reduction in Transport Fares Effective May 25
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025.
The decision follows a meeting between GPRTU leadership and the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, held on Monday, May 19. The move is in response to an 18% drop in fuel prices across the country.
Speaking to the media, GPRTU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the fare adjustment, stating that the union remains committed to fair pricing in line with changing economic conditions.
“In line with our commitment to fair pricing, we have agreed to reduce fares by 15% starting this Saturday,” Mr. Moro said. “While our usual approach is to adjust fares by one-third of any fuel price change, we have opted for a larger reduction this time to offer greater relief to commuters.”
Mr. Moro further encouraged other industries, particularly those in the automotive spare parts sector, to also reduce their prices in response to the improving economic climate.
“We did not wait for other cost factors to drop before implementing this reduction. Our priority is to support government efforts to ease the cost of living for Ghanaians.”
He also issued a strong warning to union members, emphasizing strict compliance with the new fare structure.
“Once the union makes a decision, all members are expected to comply without exception. Any driver or operator found charging above the approved fare will face disciplinary action.”
The GPRTU’s move is expected to bring welcome relief to commuters nationwide and set a positive precedent for other sectors to follow in lightening the economic burden on citizens.
