NACOC Boss Proposes Special Courts for Narcotics Cases
Brigadier General Maxwell O. Mantey, Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), has proposed the establishment of special courts to handle narcotics-related cases. He noted that a significant number of current cases involve tainted assets, which often deteriorate in value due to prolonged legal delays.
Brig Gen Mantey emphasized that swift convictions of drug traffickers would deal a serious blow to their operations. Expedited rulings would also enable the state to lawfully confiscate ill-gotten assets, reinforcing the deterrent effect of anti-drug laws.
He made this proposal during a courtesy visit to Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, during which he introduced himself and expressed appreciation for the Attorney General’s continued support. The Director-General lauded the collaboration between NACOC and the Attorney General’s Department, and reaffirmed NACOC’s commitment to relying on the AG’s legal expertise in prosecuting narcotics offenses.
The meeting also explored potential amendments to the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), aimed at strengthening the legal framework for combating drug trafficking and related crimes.
Dr. Ayine commended Brig Gen Mantey and his team for their dedication to the fight against narcotics. He welcomed the proposal for special courts and assured the Commission that the matter would receive due consideration.
