AMA kicks off intensive clean-up and decongestion operation in Accra CBD today

AMA Launches Decongestion Exercise in Central Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has commenced a major decongestion exercise aimed at restoring order and improving sanitation in the capital.

The operation, which began today, will focus on key areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. Targeted locations include Kinbu Road, Railways, ECG Junction, and Opera Square. The exercise will also extend from Wato Junction to Cow Lane—vital routes within the city center.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Gilbert Ankrah, the AMA’s Public Relations Officer, emphasized the scope of the operation. “The plan is simple,” he said. “We will address all zones around the AMA Head Office, including areas near the Accra City Hotel and the Mövenpick Hotel.”

Ahead of the exercise, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey held a meeting with street hawkers to seek their support and cooperation.

“I urge you to help us clean up the city,” he said. “We all desire a cleaner, more organized environment, and your cooperation is essential.”

Mr. Allotey also tied the initiative to a broader vision for the city’s future under the proposed 24-hour economy policy. “This policy will create new opportunities for you to operate overnight. But for now, we ask that you stay off the pavements as we carry out this cleanup effort.”

The decongestion campaign is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, ease pedestrian movement, and improve the overall aesthetic of Accra’s urban landscape.
