Atwima Mponua Assembly Members Rally Behind Sakina Oforiwaa for DCE Nomination
A growing number of assembly members in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region are calling on President John Dramani Mahama to nominate Hon. Sakina Oforiwaa as District Chief Executive (DCE), warning they will resist any alternative nominee.
On May 9, 2025, thirty-four assembly members formally petitioned President Mahama, requesting that Sakina Oforiwaa— a former assemblywoman and community leader — be considered for the position. That number has since increased to 40 out of 50 members, giving her more than the required two-thirds majority support in the assembly.
Atwima Mponua, along with Asante Mampong, remains one of only two districts in the Ashanti Region yet to receive a DCE nomination.
The petition to the President reads: “We express our unwavering support for Hon. Sakina Oforiwaa as DCE.” It commends her integrity, dedication to service, and ability to engage effectively with traditional leaders and community groups.
Supporters of Madam Oforiwaa highlighted her significant contributions to local development. Among her initiatives, she donated 30 motorbikes to support the mobility of assembly members and provided free meals during electoral events, demonstrating her practical commitment to governance and grassroots empowerment.
Assembly members praised her inclusive leadership style and collaborative approach, noting that she is capable of fostering unity and accelerating development across the district.
They also urged President Mahama to honor his pledge to promote gender equality in governance. “Appointing Sakina Oforiwaa would not only fulfill the President’s promise to increase women’s representation but also bring competent and compassionate leadership to our district,” the statement read.
Donfeh Emmanuel, the Assembly Member for Ntobroso, reiterated this position at a press conference, stating: “There may be other candidates, but the overwhelming majority of us stand with Madam Sakina. Her name was met with loud cheers when the shortlist was announced.”
Justice Nkrumah Boateng, the Presiding Member of the local assembly, echoed growing concerns about the prolonged delay in naming a DCE. He said many government programs and projects have stalled in the district due to the lack of leadership.
In a show of wider grassroots support, the United Cadres Front, a political advocacy group, held a separate press conference at Anyinamso No. 2, also backing Madam Oforiwaa. The group warned that if she is not nominated, they may take to the streets in protest.
Isaac Ampaabeng, the Communications Director of the group, stressed: “Madam Sakina is not just popular — she is capable, experienced, and well-suited for the role of DCE.”
With tensions rising and development delays mounting, supporters are urging President Mahama to expedite the nomination process — and to choose a candidate who already has the trust and backing of the majority.
