Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected Pope Leo XIV, Becomes First U.S. Pontiff

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the new pope on Thursday, becoming the first American pontiff. He has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV.

The announcement came approximately 70 minutes after white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling that the 133 cardinal electors had reached a decision. The smoke marked the conclusion of a closely watched conclave to select a new leader for the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.

Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeting a sea of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Peace be with you all,” he declared to thunderous applause from the crowd.

The moment was formally announced by French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, who delivered the traditional proclamation in Latin: “Habemus Papam” — We have a pope.

Tens of thousands filled the square, braving the wait and anticipation to witness a landmark moment in Church history, as the papacy welcomes a new chapter under its first American leader.
